Dr. Jonathan Korzun

Director, St. Joseph Municipal Band

Dr. Jonathan Korzun is only the seventh director of the St. Joseph Municipal Band in 86 seasons. He took up the baton following the end of the late Dr. Donald Moely, who retired at the end of the band's 85th season in 2022.  

Dr. Jonathan Korzun retired as Director of Bands and Instructor of Music Theory at Southwestern Michigan College in July, 2019, having taught there for 28 years. While at SMC, Dr. Korzun’s duties included conducting the Symphonic Band, Brass Band and Jazz Ensemble, and teaching the four-semester sequence of Music Theory classes. Dr. Korzun received his Bachelor's Degree (with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa) in Music Education, as well as his Master's Degree in Music Theory/Composition from Rutgers University (New Jersey). He received his Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His previous positions include Associate Director of Bands at Rutgers University, and instructor of conducting and student teacher supervisor at the University of Illinois. Dr. Korzun has frequently served as a clinician and guest conductor with area school music programs. He also has extensive experience as music director and conductor of musical theater productions with over 50 shows to his credit including two collaborations with award winning composer William Finn. 

Before becoming Director, Dr. Korzun was a member of the trombone section of the St. Joseph Municipal Band for 30 seasons.

He resides in Stevensville with his wife, Donna.
