Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a by-product from burning fuel. Therefore, any fuel-burning appliance in your home is a potential CO source. When appliances are kept in good working order, they produce very little CO. It is recommended that you only use approved and installed appliances in the home. Never use charcoal in the home. Also, make sure all fuel-burning appliances are properly vented and adjusted.

Symptoms of CO poisoning: - Carbon monoxide can kill you! The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to the flu (without fever). They include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Irregular breathing
Remember if you have any of these symptoms and you feel better when you go outside and they reappear when you re-enter the home, you may have CO poisoning.

Clues you can see:

  • Rusting or water streaking on vent or chimney
  • Loose or missing furnace panel
  • Sooting
  • Loose or disconnected vent or chimney connection
  • Debris or soot falling from chimney, fireplace, or appliance
  • Loose masonry on chimney
  • Moisture inside if windows
Clues you cannot see:
  • Internal appliance damage or malfunction
  • Improper burner adjustment
  • Hidden blockage or damage in chimney
