The City Attorney is appointed by the City Commission to serve as the City’s in-house legal counsel as described in the City Charter. The City Attorney advises the City Commission, the City Manager, the City’s boards and commissions, and City staff on legal matters pertaining to the City. The City Attorney attends all meetings of the City Commission, Municipal Officer’s Compensation Board, Election Commission and various boards as directed.

The City Attorney cannot provide legal advice or represent private citizens or citizen groups.  However, the City Attorney may be available to answer questions about the City Code of Ordinances, enforcement issues, and other city matters.

 
Areas of responsibility include:
 
Providing oral and written advice and opinions to the City Commission, City Manager, Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, commissions and boards (as directed), and department heads; legal research; reviewing, drafting, advising and negotiating various documents, including City ordinances, contracts, RFPs, leases, purchase agreements, deeds, easements, grant proposals, policies and procedures; Prosecuting ordinance violations; representing the City in various legal proceedings.
